Ali Express – Impacting Australian Small Business

Recently I got in touch with Brooke Staff, a very passionate mother whose daughter, Zeta (Instagram @misszetarose) is a brand representative to a number of handmaiden businesses including Nurture the Nest. Brooke has experienced firsthand the impact globalisation has had on the Australian small business marketplace through the entrance of companies such as Ali Express. Brooke has written her experiences below, and it makes for some very eye-opening reading, particularly for owners of Australian small businesses whose products could be easily replicated or copied on a mass scale. Ali Express – Fast track to the demise of small handmade business in Australia? Written by Brooke Staff. There’s an old saying…

Work, Home, Jobs, Kids – Overwhelmed?

This week has been a particularly trying one! All my responsibilities, work, home, jobs and kids, seem to be conspiring against me and are on a collision course to take me down! I have a number of deadlines due at work, it’s school holidays so all the kids are at home, my son starts kinder next week and the constant insistence that he isn’t going, is wearing thin. My husband’s work has hit a crisis point, and I’ve been dumped with more than the lions share of the home duties. Then there is my own business to run. The Best Household Budget Worksheet! And it’s Free!

Recently a tragic event in my local community has brought to my attention that not as many woman as I thought, have a say or any control of their own personal or family finances, which I have taken for granted. I am fortunate enough to be in an equal relationship where mutual respect and appreciation is a key to the survival of our marriage. My husbands preference is to not see the bills as they come in and fall due, as this impacts his anxiety and usually keeps him awake at night, so early on in our relationship our accounts were joined and I took over running the daily ins…

As a former obese child, I find the current proposal made by the Global Obesity Centre (GLOBE) at Deakin University to a Senate committee, regarding the weighing and measuring of school children in an attempt to gather data on the obesity rates and target communities most “at risk” abhorrent! I remember the impact this had on me; being subject to such assessment by a teacher I wasn’t comfortable with, taking my measurements and recording them down for me to feel pretty shitty about! From an early age, chances are an obese child already knows they are fat; a classmate has probably ridiculed them for it! Further, subjecting the child to…

How’s your mental health and wellbeing?

Anxiety, stress, depression, yelling at the kids, yelling at your partner, bursting in to tears, a sense of overwhelming dread. Grabbing the bottle of wine, waiting for the warmth of that first gulp to numb your sense, so you are armed to survive the 4pm witching hour, then going for another glass only to realise the bottle is completely empty when you finally get to sit down for the night, with the final flutter of your children’s eyelids as they drift off to sleep. This was the state of my mental health and wellbeing after the birth of my 3rd baby. And based on quiet and private chats I have…
